Why is Ally McCoist not walking away?

During the dark days of
administration, along with the great Sandy Jardine, Ally McCoist was a superb
figurehead for the Rangers support.
Alongside our late icon who now
has a stand named after him, McCoist galvanised the fanbase and was the ideal
leader for us to look up to. He coined that famous phrase of not walking away,
and while it rang hollow some years later, at the time it was the perfect
fillip.

No one can take away McCoist’s
legendary playing days, his leadership in the hours we needed him, and the
sheer astounding stress any manager post-2012 would be under, and that includes
McDowall and the current incumbent, Stuart McCall.
So this entry is not designed as
an attack on McCoist, far from it – overlooking his rather woeful management of
the playing side, as an inspirational figure during the worst of it in 2012
along with Sandy Rangers could do little better than the pair of them.
However, when he finally did do partial
walking away, and was placed on Gardening Leave, the view of many Rangers fans
was when the board was overthrown, McCoist would sever himself from Rangers
entirely, foregoing his ongoing salary, in the best interests of the Club
because he is a real Rangers man.
With the right men now in charge
of the Club, the support was under the impression multimillionaire McCoist
would have had his anti-board point made, cut off the salary and completely
quit.
It simply has not happened.
A week and a half on and Kenny
McDowall has already moved on – presumably a payoff, but then, he is not a ‘real
Rangers man’ and never was. Nor did he ever claim to be, in all fairness. If
anything he is a Buddies man, with the lion’s share of his playing career
taking place in Paisley. Then as a coach he
was with Celtic before switching to Ibrox under Walter in 2007. He is not a
dyed-in-the-wool Bear.
But McCoist is. Or is supposed to
be. He proxied his shares to the RST to give fans’ the vote prior to 2013’s AGM
and voted in favour of King et al earlier this month at the EGM.
So, with a salary of £800,000,
why is McCoist still picking up the wage from Rangers when his predecessor, who
would have infinitely less reason to show any kind of empathy for Rangers’ best
interests, went without really a lot of fuss?
This is cash Rangers cannot
afford. Nearly a million. Just like Lee McCulloch. Both are draining the Club
of £1.6M a year and neither is giving it a single thing.
What is the delay in McCoist
severing his ties and saving the Club around £500,000? I am all for the man
playing a lesser role at Ibrox, but his feeding off the fat of the land, even
with the old board gone, does not fit with the image of a ‘Real Rangers Man’.
I am far from saying McCoist is
not a Rangers man, he is. But this salary issue is ugly and he has the freedom
to waive it.
He is apparently not.
And that is worrying.

  1. well said….I personally have been saying this since King took over…If were are to think that he is a bear and has Rangers at heart…then why no announcement that he has left without pay off…

    • I know you guys don't lime to pay your bills but if you stop honouring contract because as a business you don't want them anymore then naebody will work for you

    • Call me whatever you like mate the fact of the matter is when you march in a and take over a business that business has liabilities which have to be paid. I sure Dave King has had a few reality cheques since taking over and sooner or later he's gonna have to sign them. I think it was a big mistake bringing him onboard but time will tell.

  2. when mccoist came to rangers he took a wage cut from the money he made from the media so at the end of the day its his money.what would u have called him if he did walk away when he could have he stayed to fight for rangers never worked out but that's because of the players not mccoist

    • He signed the players because he didn't have the foresight to identify and develop potential. He has no coaching ability, therefore, just tried to buy the finished article.
As big a disaster for Rangers as Murray selling the club to Whyte and pretending he was 'a big boy whom he didn't know'

    • He stayed because of the money, its that simple, he took sides with every single CEO and director that was appointed when he was manager……………..people on £800k a year seldom do walking away volunteraly!!!!

  3. its all to do with McCoist he bought the players….went about it all wrong from start…also had no ability to change a game with tactics ect….McCoist as a player Legend…McCoist the manager big let down…he took wage cut from T.V!!!…poor him that he then only earned £800,000 a year in the 2nd& 3RD divisions…..get a grip m8

  4. McCoist thinks that his performance after being handed the job entitles him to the remainder of his contract in full. He also intends to keep the discounted shares he accepted from Green.
That's his prerogative but the Rangers fans have long memories. He is one of the greedmongers and should be judged alongside his colleagues, Whyte, Green, Easdale etc. Should never be allowed to set foot inside Ibrox again!

    • That's a bit harsh!
The man is a legend. He's Rangers through & through. Remember WE DON'T DO WALKING AWAY!

    • Find it odd, is Mr Mc a multi millionaire, might be, but if so, he earned it by not burning it, thus why would he walk away from £800k for doing nothing, if he is not a multi millionaire, then he probably needs the money, after all as a manager he does not have a big future. Then if you judge him with others, a bit unfair, however I think you might put King in the same bracket, very soon you will realise he is back to get money he lost years ago, £20m, like McC he is human, why should or would he do anything other than take what he is in fact due.

  5. This is exactly the reason i refuse to put my hard earned money into Rangers now. you know how many hours i need to work just for my cash to be passed onto our most useless manager ever. If Ally was a real Rangers man he'd have help save our club for nothing, i know i would have.

    • And yet you say you refuse to put your hard earned money in to Rangers!
      Isn't that a little hypocritical?

    • No he's not being hypocritical. If ally is a millionaire from all the money he made in media and his playing career & manager career then he should be able to ditch his current contract until rangers are back in the premiership. That's not a 'rangers man' that's a man cashing in on rangers lowest point

  6. There is no way I would take a pay cut,let alone give it all up while all those other shysters lined their pockets instead of giving him money to buy decent players. Our team is shit. We have to accept the fact and rebuild it as best we can with no money to speak of.Why don't we ask the team to give up their wages, because the majority of them are there under false pretences. We need to start afresh, stop moaning and get behind the team, even if they're not up to standard, because they are all we have.

    • Ha ha – so delusional. No money for decent players? Second highest wage bill in Scotland in the fourth tier.

  7. Agree with previous post,Ex-legend in my view, and I'm not alone in thinking along those lines. It's all about the money eh Ally?

  8. To say mcdowall isnt a rangers man us wrong, in fact kenny comes from a loyalist blue nose family and grew up supporting Rangers. All in all a good article apart from this…

  9. You have a short memory…If it wasn't for Ally we would not have our famous club today…forget his managerial shortcomings, he deserves every penny

    • Absolute nonsense. He didn't walk away because nobody else in football would employ him. He was gift wrapped the job by Smith. His ineptitude continues to cost us dearly. He must have know the job was beyond him, but a few easy seasons in the lower leagues on English Premier salary must have been very appealing. His infamy will live long in the annuls of Rangers history. Paul le Gwen walked away with honour and dignity. However he tries to earn a living in the future we can still exert influence on any potential employers. Have a nice life Ally.

    • Totally agree with you John.
In fact I would like to see him back at the helm again. The failings were not his but the ones above him.

    • Well said John. This site has repeatedly shown poor judgement and backed the scumbags while badmouthing the true Rangers men. McCoist will always be a Rangers legend. I don't grudge him a penny.

  10. How can you say Kenny Mac is not a real Ger?…Only a few can wear the jersey. I know he his a Bluenose.Ok he wasnt good enough to play for us, but he jumped at the chance to leave Celtic n join Walters COACHING staff

  11. As a goodwill gift to Rangers Ally should donate all of his salary to Rangers FC, since he was put on gardening leave. The money should be used to buy a young up and coming striker who
would take a lot of pressure of the team to me that is the fundamental problem .

  12. Ally McCoist is a Rangers legend and always will be. He was there for us when we were down and had to work under extremely difficult circumstances. All this talk of bringing through a lot of young players is misplaced as well considering there was no scouting in place and maybe just maybe the young players at the club were not good enough.

  13. Its not fair to get on Ally for taking money that he is contractually obligated to. How many of you would tell the company they work for, oh its ok keep the money I am due per my contract. He is doing nothing wrong and it would be a very big deal if he did forego it

    • Not if you were getting over paid and let's say, it was your parents company that you had a lot of love for them and they tell you, "son, were going through some tough times right now, we might have to ask you to lower your salary so we can keep our company alive" would you tell the people you love (in ally's case, the club he loves) that you won't lower the contract because 'we had a deal in black and white' maybe you should think of it that way if your going to use analogies. He claims he loves this club, you sure he doesn't love the money more?

  14. McCoist has just proven that he is money making parasite, just like the rest of them!! As for this legend status clap trap,,the scored 1 in 15 chances in every game,,its the likes of David Cooper, Mark Walters,,and other talented players that put the ball to his feet. And he got paid thousands back then,, so he is nothing but a parasite,, if he walked after the board was voted out, then I may have had a different view,,but he hasn't,,looking for the big pay off,,parasite!!

  15. A legend u must be join rangers man don't think so this is the guy who turned down rangers to play for Sunderland then when he couldn't get a game for them turned us down again before he came to us with his tail between his legs legend never

  16. "this isn't an attack on McCoist……I'm not saying he's not a Rangers man"

Ahem…..someone knows he speaks with forked tongue….

  17. McCoist has been a flop, his subordinates a shambles.

But to read the shit he's taking by so called bears here is outrageous. I'm as big a Bluenose as anyone and would walk ower burning coals to watch the team never mind play for them…..if I won the Euromillions biggin' I would plough 10's of millions in.

However, if Gers owed me a £1M now I'd be taking it. Anyone out there who says otherwise is quite frankly talking shite.

    • Not if you had over a million in the bank all ready. After that it's greed. Aye your saying you would do it but have u made a bunch of money from tv shows, were you a highly paid footballer ? No! The analogies on here are embarrassing.

  18. The article is not about whether or not McCoist is a Rangers legend OR a terrible manager. Most Rangers supporters would probably agree that he's both. The point is that over many years Rangers have made him a very wealthy man. However, while the majority of supporters thought or hoped he was on gardening leave and taking the wages (which he was contractually entitled to) he was only doing so in order to keep the old Board under financial pressure. Unfortunately, as he's continuing to take these wages for doing nothing even after the old Board has gone, supporters are becoming increasingly concerned that someone who claims to love our club so much and who is already very wealthy, is being greedy when we're struggling financially. Right now we need the money more than Mr McCoist and if he's as much of a Rangers man as he claims to be, he should stop taking these wages immediately and even think about handing some/all of it back. That would be a great gesture.

  19. The biggest condemnation of Ally is the fact that the Celtic fans were gutted to see him walking away, to a man they all wanted him given a lifetime contract, that should tell you all you need to know about Ally's managerial capabilities…

  20. McCoist has ruined our club. We wont get promoted as we cant even beat the bottom of the table at home!,, McCall rooted Motherwell to the bottom of the Premiership before he left, so how does that qualify him to get the Rangers job,,oh wait,,I know,, he's a pal of Allys,, We need to rid the coaches from top to bottom,,, do not hire Ex Rangers players!!,, Go German, total football, total fitness, skillful, winners, disciplined,, every our team aint!!! We need Rangers men to run the club, that i agree,, but we dont need Rangers men to run the team,, have all failed so far,, we so need to change our strategy Mr King, start thinking outside the box,, we are a disgrace,,old pals act,, will never work!!!

    • McCall did well for Motherwell and proved himself a good manager. Unfortunately, having to sell their best players every year proved too much for McCall as it probably would have done for anyone else. No one would be able to change things around at Rangers as quickly as some fans expect and he maybe won't have enough time as practically the full squad will have to change. And the fact that McCall is a friend of Ally's and an ex-Rangers Player doesn't matter. There's absolutely no reason why an ex-player shouldn't be Manager of Rangers. So far he's manager till the end of the season, so at least give him a chance before shouting your mouth off.
