Did we really learn anything from the hiding by Burnley?

It was only a friendly. And as such conclusions cannot really be drawn too much about today’s comprehensive loss to Burnley at Ibrox, but nevertheless it provided a lot of food for thought going into next weekend’s Premiership curtain raiser against Hamilton, food it is clear manager Mark Warburton will be chewing on thoroughly.

The first point of note is Burnley are a step up in class from anything Rangers have faced in the past four years, including their own selves this time last summer. They have won the Championship, and their squad is befitting of a solid EPL team. It is also a better team than anything Rangers will face this upcoming campaign, by some considerable distance in fact.

Rangers hope to complete two signings today

Rangers have been linked with a fair few goalies over the recent weeks, with Southend United’s Daniel Bentley and now free agent Michael McGovern, who was recently released by Premiership Hamilton, among them.

However surprise news broke this morning when Burnley’s Scotland international Matt Gilks jetted into Glasgow for talks about becoming Mark Warburton’s latest addition, with the 34 year old another free agent within the market Rangers are currently active in.

Joey Barton: will he won't he?

It is not often that Rangers’ manager Mark Warburton is ‘reduced’ to admitting that a player holds the aces in a deal, but that is effectively what is currently taking place with the Joey Barton saga.

After previously preaching about only wanting players who want to be at Ibrox, and never talking about transfer deals in progress (always citing how he will not talk about another team’s player), Warbs’ has had to rip up his own form book, such is the determination with which he is pursuing Barton’s signature, and the esteem he clearly holds the ex-Man City midfielder in.

The Magic Hat has admitted it is quite simply a waiting game now, with the fanbase and himself holding a collective breath for Barton’s answer.

Joey Barton!

Despite this (and other) sites’ understandable mockery and dubiety of the story some weeks ago, it does now seem that free agent Joey Barton is seriously on Mark Warburton’s horizon as a new recruit at Ibrox.

The 33-year old’s influence on English football over the past couple of decades falls into infamy and legend, but no one would deny his ability – he is one of those players who, if he had managed to wise up at a younger age, and mature on the pitch, would have been a regular for England – he is, and was, that good.

Rangers linked to English winger

Despite appearing to have a decent compliment of wingers at Ibrox, Rangers have nevertheless been linked with another, in the form of Shrewsbury Town’s Josh Ginnelly.

The 18 year old has contractual issues at the Greenhous Meadow and it has emerged that Town rejected a substantial bid worth around £400,000 compensation (the player is said to be valued at more) from Sean Dyche’s Championship cracks Burnley.

Burnley come to town - what to expect from Warburton's Rangers

Tonight’s visit of English Championship cracks Burnley represents the first real test of the fledgling Mark Warburton era.

Rangers have undergone sweeping changes since the former Brentford manager took over the helm, including colossal turnover in the playing squad.

Fans from far and wide have been gushing in their praise of the new boss’s performance thus far, and pre-season results have given material to build on, not least the rather comfortable dispatch of Ayr United.
