Did Rangers give up today?

While fellow fans have reacted with rage and humiliation over today’s loss to Kilmarnock, we at Ibrox Noise are more sanguine.

We are of course deeply upset at any loss, but in recent articles we have more than preached the difficulty of getting anything from Steve Clarke’s team, and in many ways, without saying it, we feared the visit of Rugby Park’s finest far more than that of Celtic.

It’s almost inexplicable but had Clarke been Killie boss at the start of the season, there is a very real chance his team would be in the mix for the title. We are talking not only about Scotland’s form team, but the hardest to beat, and today we saw just why that is.

So, we were well versed in just how good Killie have gotten under the ex-West Brom manager and we cannot say their performance today surprised us one iota.

They were studiously organised, astonishingly hard working, played good football, canny with how to win free kicks, and took their one huge chance well.

In short, they were everything Rangers weren’t, and they were 100% the better team on the day.

And once again Graeme Murty has been frankly outclassed by his opponent and made to look a very ordinary manager (or worse) – incapable of changing things for the better (aye, Jason Holt and Kenny Miller will solve everything) when they go wrong and adapting for difficult matches.

We had been inexplicably impressed with him up till the Celtic match, but that performance and result changed things.

Two losses in a row at Ibrox is simply intolerable, and only Greg Docherty (in tears at the end), defensively speaking James Tavernier, and hard-working Jason Cummings come out the match with any credibility.

Every other player clearly gave up after 60 or so minutes, even Murphy. Alfredo Morelos’ value has absolutely plummeted following a third borderline open goal shambles.

We will further pore over the dire wreckage of this atrocity in a later piece, but for Rangers players to throw the towel in is an absolute disgrace.

Seven days ago most Rangers fans were looking at the future with hope, growth and even expectation.

In one week we’ve gone from challenging to the title to descending to Pedro levels of farce again.

Lost for words.

  1. very strange game player looked as if they did not give a shit ,docherty, tav, exceptions ,murty in trouble ,dont get me wrong anything that can go wrong usually does totally shattered as i think we are going backwards again team is full off bottlers ,ive had it with loanee players whats the point .

  2. I'll probably get slated for this but I said when we got back to the premier league, if we finish in the top 3 within 3 seasons I'll be happy. We will win games, draw games and even lose to lower teams but progress HAS been made. We are still on a shoestring budget and that will be the case for years to come. Prudent financial management is needed and in a year or maybe 2, Rodgers will go to newer pastures despite him saying how happy he is. Our time will come again. WATP

  3. Thats the dream of a tile chase over as good as it was. Hanging on in desperation of getting to and winning a final. What a coup that would be. Its been a big improvement recently but not enough it would seem. Time to start looking for replacing certain members of management for next season. What a pish week.

  4. Killie have lost only one match since last November so I was agreeing with your comments up to the point where you slagged Murty off for bringing on Millar and holt. He had very little to work with from the bench and certainly had nobody there to replace Alves who again was a liability when the ball is on the ground. If Murty was so incompetent bringing on the two you mentioned who would you have brought that would have been any better. Unfortunately our team was on a poor day but in my opinion the bench was every bit as poor and i am interested how your choices of subs would have made the difference we required.

    • It's a fair point, and we've made reference to how atrocious the bench is. But our argument is less about the options on the bench, more how Murty has used them – there is a lack of tactical nous at play here, and every time Murty has found himself backed against a wall (Hibs, Celtic, now Killie) he has failed to effect change effectively. That's his job, and not ours. He's the one paid the big bucks now and they end with him. If he is unable to change things when they go wrong, that is a problem, whatever options he has on the bench.

    • Murty picked the bench and his subs were fuking rediculise. Holt for Goss joke.
Kenny Miller WTF is he even doing near the bench hopeless.
If we had any doubt that Murty ain't the man we have none now.
Great guy but not got a clue tactically I'm afraid!!

  5. Not sure what Murty could have done with the players available on the bench to change the game. But, he has not pushed his case well in the last week. Tactically out thought both times.
Wonder what Clarke's buy-out clause is?

  6. I have been saying it for months now. 2nd place is our target. The loan deals were common sense. Summer will see big changes. Including Murty. We need 2 decent centre halves and strong midfield. Jack and Doran’s might be what’s required for midfield. But look at Marty’s home record. A disgrace. Warburton bought rubbish and so did Pedro. January’s signings are on trial. We need new investment but we need new Manager above all.

  7. Can’t see Murty getting the job now but as I said before the Kilmarnock manager must have a shout. Anyone who can make Broadfoot into a good defender must be a genius.

  8. I think today once and for all puts to bed any notion that Murty will be given the managers job at the end of the season. Decent bloke, good coach, and he has given us a bit of dignity back, and in recent weeks some flickering hope – but as your article highlights what a difference an experienced manager can make to the same group of players -and quite simply the Ibrox job is too big for a rookie manager to learn his trade. Murty might go back to the youth team -personally I would like to see him remain in the dugout as assistant to whoever comes in – but it may be that he will leave get some experience elsewhere in a less pressured environment and one day come back as a much improved manager to take over the reins.
As for the players there is still a softness about this Rangers team – winners they are not. Too many disappear into their shell just when they are needed to step up to the plate. The dismal record at Ibrox 5his season demonstrates that the shirt is too heavy for some. As I feared Alves and Martin are too slow to play together as a defensive pairing. The injury to Bates shows what a mistake it was to let Danny Wilson leave in January. There is also the problem what to do about Morelos and Cumming? Cumming is the better finisher but Morelos bullies defences (Celtic included) and creates the space for o5hers. Cummings doesn’t do this to 5he same extent. Put the ball at his feet in the box and he will finish it – but you have to find a way to get the ball to join in the first place. Murty made an error of judgement today dropping Morelos and bending to the online experts. As a result our attack was toothless with Cummings dropping back further and further to look for 5he ball. Morelos started out as a midfielder and I wonder if 5he answer is Morelos in the no10 role behind Cummings? Meanwhile Goss is looking more and more like a player that can’t get into the QPR team.

  9. I've always wanted murty to get the job permanently but after the last 2 games we have seen him outclassed tactically! A good manager playing against rangers knows we are going to be strong on each wing..so Clarke sets up to force us through the middle where I've said many times "midfield isn't strong enough" then we were over ran and thoroughly outplayed from start to finish. We can't set up a team to accommodate Josh windass because he isn't good enough! The rest of the team are nowhere near good enough to carry him for the 80 mins he disappears (90 today). We should have known Clarke would do this, so we should have flooded our midfield and have had 2 up front! 7 defeats at home? Absolute joke! Out in that weather to watch that farce! Remember the days Advocaat would watch a game for 5 minutes then sprint from the directors box to the touchline and make a tactical change or even a substitution if need be? Murty is a great guy who has done us proud but he's no manager!

  10. Kilmarnock were 6/1 for a win. Wonder what they are for a double next season with Steve Clark at the helm. Ranger's formation was dire, wide open, no penetration and Cummings foraging in Miller's old role of wing half under Warburton.
It was awful and predictable to watch and the players have obviously lost faith in their formations which leaves them chasing shadows.
This team have a lot of hard work to do to stay in the top four>

  11. Murty can't get the job, he's shown again he does not have the experience to manage a club the size of us, we need a manager who can change a formation before we go a goal behind, a manager who has the know how to go for a game before it's to late.murty has done well enough but not the long term option.

  12. it could be the loan players are not as good as we thought they where, there was a real fight in the sided before jan 2018 we got off to a great start with the loan players but now there heads are looking else where holidays are coming.

  13. The knives are out that didn’t take long ffs., Aye that’s it sack Murty get rid of Morelos problem solved eh don’t talk shite! Fickle is a fucking understatement let’s see if you put this one up IN

  14. guys your managers on the journey have been a legend but a dumpling in mccoist, a banker in warbuton, an escaped convict from carstairs in caixinha, a lucky escape with del boy and an under 20's coach. none of them a rangers manager.
you were bought for a pound by a guy that should have went to jail, then bought for a song by a couple of chancers in green/ahmad, handed over to mcgills buses, a couple of supporters, hearts in right places but not the money then passed over to a convicted liar in king.
we've not even mentioned the players you've watched.
it's a feckin disgrace whats happened to your club but to even be where you are with the above is a miracle
the rangers I know is only to this day reflected in the stands, somewhere down the road someone will pull the club together, eventually.
you need a proper manager, top dollar, dare I say it like my club in Brendan. if you get a manager that knows his stuff you'll piss all over the rest of the spfl and it'll come down to the old firms games

  15. Feel rotten for Murty, gets a coupe of wins and everyone gets OVEREXCITED, a couple of defeats and the end of the world is arriving, the biggest challenge he's got now is to be a better manager than he is, tough one!!

  16. I know it sounds "knee jerk" but we have to make Steve Clarke the priority target in the summer. He is clearly a man who has mastered his craft and has tremendous experience and contacts within the game. He carries himself well and wouldn't be fazed taking on Celtic – he's beat them already with Kilmarnock.

  17. As Much as I Respect Murty and how much Good he's brought to the Club…
    …He isnt a Rangers Manager

We played Pish and Kilmarnock deserved to win simple as that 👎
(Even tho it pains to say it)

  18. Wouldnt have Clarke DCNumberOne

He's a Tim & A Prick and he's spent nearly every minute since he signed up at Killie cryin about how scottish football is a joke and everyone picks on Killie and Refs dont give them anything. 👊

  19. Spot on Ibrox Noise, agree 100%. I see the ones who were previously supporting murty and spouting off to give him the job full time and give him 10 million pounds, have changed their minds?! Glad your seeing the light at last!!
We have been playing like this since we came into the SPFL. We are an average team who are at the same level as all the teams bar shellic!,, The defeats at home under Warbuton, Pedro and Murty is totally unacceptable.
It's not the case of how good Kilmarnock are, its a case of how poor and inconsistent we are! The jersey is far too heavy for them!
Dave King and the board said at last AGM that second place is the goal this season. That attitude shows on the park and the players attitude and application yesterday (bar Tav and Docherty) was shocking and disgraceful.
We have average players and a poor inexperienced manager, playing mediocre and inconsistent football. We will be lucky to get second. We are gifting the beggars 10 in a row!
If Rangers have a manager in mind, get him now, as second place looks very unlikely. With only a handful of games left, all the other teams will be fighting tooth and nail to get points to get into Europe or get into the top 6. We have shown we can't handle the pressure and that's down to the players and manager!

    • We need to bring in lenny to kick the slackers into touch, hes the man for the job,he loves the gers fans
