Rangers first-team star rejects new deal; reports

Rangers fans will be pleased that James Tavernier and Josh Windass are officially tied down to new deals, but in slightly more worrying news, David Bates has reportedly rejected a number of offers to extend his deal beyond the summer.

The 21-year old stopper has had a strong start to life at Ibrox as a permanent first-team fixture, especially since the departure of Danny Wilson and the disappearance of Bruno Alves, but Rangers’ attempts to tie him down to a longer deal have as yet failed to secure his signature.

Naturally, it must be remembered this has mixed ramifications. Sometimes players will reject deals in attempts to negotiate better offers, and when James Tavernier rejected a deal many months ago, well, that got remedied very recently – but from a more negative point of view Barrie McKay also rejected a new deal and never had any intention of signing up.

Bates for his part is a promising centre half but not the final product yet – and there is an underlying feeling among some portions of the support that he is long term not good enough to be a Rangers defender. Others feel he has proven himself.

Either way, right now, he is destined to leave this summer unless Rangers offer him what he thinks he is worth.

  1. Bates should be careful not to overplay his hand. With Alves and McCrorie close to returning and Cardoso still around he might find himself as 5th choice centre back. He should accept the improved offer on the table then set out to get an improved offer like those already made to McCrorie, Tavernier and Windass based on their performances.

  2. David is a lovely big honest lad. But he is never Rangers class on the pitch. I'm hoping Martins performance on Sunday was a one off and due to the surface.
All in all, we need 2, big/tall, athletic centre halves who can header a ball out and a threat to the opposition at set pieces, we have no height!!
Hamilton scored 3 goals. Albeit I'm delighted with the 3 points, but defend like that against the tarts on Saturday, then we will be in trouble! Again!

  3. I like Bates, he's a decent defender and plays in an old fashioned no nonsense way but he should be very careful not to push his luck or he will find himself out the door, Danny Wilson style…

  4. I would not go as far as the last post but if Bates thinks he deserves anything remotely like, for example, the contract extension given to McCrory, the boy needs to get a reality check. He is not in the same class. And had not Wilson left, and Alves and McCrory been on the injury list he would be nowhere near the first team. At the end of the season he will be shipped put to a championship side: his true level.

  5. Honestly. I see a new cb being our priorty in the summer. If he’s trying to hard ball for more money then he can end up else where for less

  6. Young Bates is a lovely lad having spoken with him a few times . He has potential but needs to learn , not sure who is advising him but he cannot do any better in Scotland for sure and he is not physical enough for the English Championship.

  7. Let Him Go!
    ..he aint exactly John Terry
..hes not as good as he thinks he is

And what hes obviously forgotten is that he was cut adrift at RAITH ROVERS! 😂
