A headache for Murty, but a nice one…

If yesterday’s win at Ayr highlighted one thing, it was the impressiveness of both central midfielders deployed against Ian McCall’s team.

Sean Goss was once again outstanding, and Greg Docherty impressed highly on his first start.

Which gives us a huge ‘problem’.

Unless fans had forgotten, there are another four ‘marquee’ players in Rangers’ squad, currently unavailable through injury, who would all demand a place in the engine room.

Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans and Jordan Rossiter are all currently indisposed – three of them are out for sure with injury, while Rossiter is seemingly fit again but overlooked for the senior squad at present.

But that is, in total, six very fine central midfielders and only two slots (be it a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2) for the lot of them! At most generous, three in a 4-3-3.

It is in many respects a nice problem to have, and it is even nicer that we do not have the problem at present, but one by one these guys will return and before the end of the season in many cases, and we will have to find a way to make them all happy.

There is of course some dispensation; Graham Dorrans could be deployed in the three in a 4-2-3-1, or at the apex of a diamond in a 4-4-2, while identifying when/if Jordan Rossiter will return probably requires a crystal ball.

But nevertheless in theory we have a sheer embarrassment of riches and not enough space to fit them in.

It certainly gives squad depth and cover of a high standard, and we have not forgotten Goss will return to QPR at the end of the season to reduce the options to five (unless we can persuade Les Ferdinand to change his mind), but nevertheless that is a lot of high quality mids and so few spaces to fit them in.

There are also the likes of Andy Halliday and Jason Holt which really does give us a hell of a lot of choice as the weeks and months go by and injured players recover.

A proper Rangers team really should have standards of this level and higher, and we are naturally pleased to see such depth at our manager’s disposal. But we do not envy his management of it.
