£1.6M winger keen to make summer switch

As we all know, Rangers did some good work this January. Squad surgery was badly needed and while only one permanent signing was made, four high-quality loans came in too and each of them have added something to the squad and enhanced us.

One of those acquisitions who has increasingly impressed is Brighton’s Jamie Murphy. Initially fans expected this would be a permanent signing, but instead the former Motherwell winger arrived from the Falmer Stadium on a six-month loan with option to make it permanent in the summer.

And there is no question that Murphy’s performances have slowly but surely made him undroppable.

A productive all round player, Murphy is most often deployed on the left of midfield, and while being right footed cuts in and torments the full back and the CBs.

How many times have we already seen him cut in on his right and turn defences’ blood inside out by dashing along the perimeter of the box? It is a potent weapon but not the only contribution he has made – he has frequently gotten to the byline too and use that less potent left foot to cross, so it is evident he is a workhorse.

But it would do him a disservice to omit the defensive side of his game. Think Daniel Candeias who frequently covers for James Tavernier on the other side – well Murphy frequently does it for Declan John and is forming a pretty pungent partnership with the Welsh international as a result.

The price for the ex-Sheffield Utd man was plugged by the media at between £800,000 and £1.3M when Rangers were working on the deal, but his impressive displays at Ibrox seem to have increased that a tad to £1.6M, albeit transfermarkt.com claims £1.6M has been his value for a couple of years.

Going by what we have seen thus far, one and a half million is a very fair price for a player at 28 who has up to 5 fine years left in him, and given we reportedly paid that for Graham Dorrans whose Ibrox career is yet to get going, it might be a pretty wise outlay.

Murphy has seen his Brighton career struggle since the Seagulls gained promotion to the Premier League – benched a couple of times, he has mostly been outwith the squad for Chris Hughton’s side this season and was most definitely keen not only to leave in January and get first team football, but to come home to his childhood team.

It seems Murphy is one we would want to keep and hopefully Brighton and Rangers can sort something out this summer.

  1. Stop me if Im wrong IN but wasnt a fixed price already agreed upon prior to Murphy being sign on loan with the option to buy ?

  2. Yip, if the reports are right then the transfer fee was already set. So no matter how good or bad the players play the fee remains the same.
To be honest I think the money men at Ibrox are not that silly to let the fee go up and up.
